UNTOLD TALES FROM THE SUFFOLK SANDLINGS
More about the authors
Books, pamphlets, and articles produced by the Group.
Both local writers, Valerie Fenwick and Vic Harrup, have produced a book of twenty historical stories set in the area
between the Deben and the Ore. Piecing together scrappy information from old documents, maps, archaeological
finds, their knowledge of the landscape, and the anecdotes and memories of old folk, has taken so many years that
friends and relatives sometimes wondered if the book would ever be finished!
Vic Harrup, following his retirement as an accountant, began to uncover the history of Butley through tracing the
history of the house he lived in. He ran the Oyster Inn’s weekly singarounds for over twenty years and still actively
participates in traditional games.
Valerie Fenwick came to research the documentary history of surrounding villages following archaeological
excavation of Burrow Hill. For more than forty years she has noted or recorded the memories of old folk. She quips
that it has been a pleasure to work with Vic – he “knows his groats” so well that he has found errors in medieval
accounts!
